'Ugandan methods of diabetes treatment are shocking.' A world-famous Israeli endocrinologist gave an exclusive interview!

Last year, Prof. Shmul Klein came to Uganda to study the practices of his Ugandan colleagues. According to him, what he witnessed in Uganda is almost impossible to explain. Professor Klein says that in Uganda diabetes is still treated using outdated and ineffective methods.
After making bold statements, Prof. Shmul Klein agreed to give us an exclusive interview. What did the world-famous endocrinologist find unacceptable about the treatment of diabetes in Uganda? And why does he claim that Ugandans suffering from diabetes have no chance of achieving even remission?

— You said that the Ugandan methods of diabetes treatment are shocking. Could you comment on that?
Professor Shmul Klein (MD, PhD) serves as Head of the Department of Endocrinology at Israel’s renowned Assuta Medical Center.
First, let me make one thing very clear: I have the utmost respect for Uganda, its culture, and its people. But the state of medicine in Uganda, especially in endocrinology, is deeply shocking. The approaches being used here are at least 10, and perhaps even 20, years behind modern standards — particularly when it comes to treating diabetes.
Consider this: doctors in Uganda still recommend diets, daily exercise, pills, or insulin injections as the main treatment for diabetes. Yet these methods have long proven insufficient. They do not address the root of the disease; they only suppress blood sugar temporarily.
Meanwhile, in Israel, these outdated methods have been abandoned for over a decade. Our focus there is on the underlying metabolic dysfunction, not just the symptom of high blood sugar.
The reality is chilling: it is far more profitable to sell expensive sugar-lowering drugs or insulin than to actually cure diabetes. Even 'healthy' diets come with a high cost, making them inaccessible for many. Older patients, for whom strict regimens or intense exercise may be impossible, are particularly at risk.
By relying on these outdated treatments, doctors and pharmacists in Uganda are not just failing patients — they are actively endangering lives. Left untreated or treated incorrectly, diabetes slowly destroys the heart, kidneys, nerves, and eyes, often leading to premature death. This isn’t just medical negligence — it is, in effect, a silent, shocking epidemic of suffering.
— Since in Uganda diabetes is still treated using outdated and ineffective methods, how is diabetes treated in Israel?
Your Ugandan doctors are treating only the symptoms of diabetes — high blood sugar — instead of addressing its true causes. But blood sugar spikes are only the surface of the problem. The real issue lies much deeper: in the way our body processes glucose, how sensitive our cells are to insulin, and how well our metabolism functions.
Imagine your body as a factory. If the machines are clogged and not working properly, raw materials (sugar) begin to pile up.
